Why I Created This Book
Japanese proverbs are short, memorable expressions, but many of them carry a deeper sense of culture, humor, caution, patience, and everyday wisdom.
However, for English-speaking readers, simply reading the literal meaning of a Japanese proverb may not always be enough. Sometimes, the hardest part is understanding the kind of situation where that proverb would naturally make sense.
That is why I created this book.
In this dictionary, Japanese proverbs are explained in English, with examples inspired by well-known manga and anime scenes. The goal is to make each proverb easier to imagine, easier to remember, and more enjoyable for readers who are interested in Japan, the Japanese language, anime, or Japanese culture.
If you have ever watched an anime scene and thought, “Why did this character choose that option here?” this book may help you understand the cultural values, everyday wisdom, or traditional way of thinking behind that kind of moment.

On Enghaishin, I often write about EN VTubers, English-language streaming, and ways to enjoy English through internet culture, anime, and online communities.
This Kindle book follows a similar idea, but from the opposite direction: using anime and familiar story moments as a bridge to Japanese language and culture.
Many anime scenes are not only about what happens on screen. They can also reflect values such as patience, duty, pride, humility, perseverance, caution, or emotional restraint. Japanese proverbs can give readers a simple and memorable way to notice those ideas.
So if you have ever felt confused by a character’s decision, reaction, or way of thinking, learning a Japanese proverb connected to that kind of scene may give you a new perspective.
